Episode 220 The Dream Show: Facing fear

Episode 220 The Dream Show Jane Teresa Anderson

Jann from Western Australia is my guest asking about a scary dream she had thirty years ago.

Jann has been recording her dreams since 1983, so you’ll hear her reading her account of the dream as she wrote it down way back then.

The tension mounts as the tale is told, a dark fairy tale of a dream. There’s a small tin hut in a clearing in a forest, a scary man with a wolf-like dog that smells like death, and lots of moonlight. I won’t spoil the story!

Even after all this time, as you’ll hear, Jann remembers what was going on back then in her life, and responds to how the interpretation fits. “It’s as if you were sitting on my shoulders,” she says.

Listen in as we explore and interpret Jann’s dream. Along the way we discuss some key points about dream interpretation that will help you to understand your own dreams.

Don’t know why, but I enjoyed imagining that prince-like man and inviting him to have some tea and talk about business!…

Hi Cíntia, That would be an excellent first step for dream alchemy, getting to know the dream figure, discovering potential integrations.

    Hi Jane Teresa
So enjoying listening to your podcasts having done your introductory dream interpretation course.
Having listened to Jann’s story I have a question. Can dreams sometimes be taken literally as in Jann’s dream about Barclays?
Do we always dream about aspects of ourselves or can we sometimes dream about someone else or something else without it relating back to ourselves? And if so, how do we know which way to interpret it?

      Hi Tania,

Thank you for your comment and your question. As you know, Jann mentioned the second dream briefly, referencing the word ‘Barclays’ from the dream without describing the whole dream or putting the Barclays in context. (For people reading this who haven’t listened to the podcast, Jann awoke from this second dream, did a bit of research, and made the connection with her bank, Barclays Bank. She checked her accounts and discovered fraud.) My feeling is that Jann did know about the fraud – or at least felt something didn’t quite add up – at some level, and her dreaming mind processed this, coming up with the symbol ‘Barclays’ for bank. I imagine that if Jann had related the whole dream, we would have found meaning related to her inner world, the dream revealing aspects of herself, perhaps even aspects that had swayed her from keeping a keener eye on her bank account. But I’m conjecturing.

While we can sometimes make connections with what’s going on for other people during our dreams, this is rare compared with making connections with what’s going on within ourselves. My concern is that there is danger in taking our dreams literally: danger in presuming to know what’s going on for other people. When we take our dreams literally there is also the loss of opportunity to know ourselves more deeply, and to relate our dreams to what’s going on in our lives.

My constant urging and teaching is to first consider every dream as being about aspects of ourselves. Then, and only then, consider other levels of connection.

I hope this helps. It’s a wonderful question that you have asked. Enjoy the exploration!
