It was my son, who lives in Asia, asking if I could send his driver’s licence to the UK ahead of his arrival there next month. Last time he visited us, he renewed his Australian licence, and asked me to hold onto it until his next trip back to Australia. Change of plan! For those of you who are wondering what ‘manky’ means, it’s British slang for dirty, or dirty and old. It’s a word that’s long been in my go-to vocabulary, but I suspect those of you who are not familiar with British English may be, well, as baffled by that word as Tania was about her dream.
Tania has just completed the first of my Dream Academy courses, How to interpret your dreams step-by-step, and has been drawing on the techniques to interpret her dreams and help friends with theirs, but the manky cat dream still mystified her. She had most of it worked out, but felt she was missing something.
We find it and then relate the dream to her life and all becomes clear.
She also mentioned a dream from long ago, in which her father died when he fell into an abyss. When he died a couple of months later, she noticed parallels between the dream and his death that felt comforting. She coveted the dream, feeling it was a premonition, a connection with her father and what he was going through. Now she asks, in the light of her studies with me, was it a premonition, or was it symbolic?

In this episode we look at why you might want to re-evaluate your collection of dream dictionaries, or, perhaps, toss them altogether.
Can looking up dream themes, rather than symbols be useful? For example, looking up themes of being lost, or being late, rather than symbols like a train station (you’ve lost your way to the station) or a doctor’s surgery (you’re late for an appointment)?
We look at how far an understanding of common dream themes can be helpful, and what you need to be able to do to build on such understanding to arrive at accurate insight into your dream and your life.

In her dream, Gillian is enjoying a holiday at a Guest House, dining at a long table, when it’s announced that kangaroo is on the menu. She doesn’t want to eat kangaroo, so she decides to slip away and get pie instead, but someone says the cook will be cross if she eats pie. Kangaroo, it seems, is mandatory.
There’s a scene involving a tree inhabited by squatters, and a baby that is safe in Gillian’s arms but suffers traumatically when other people take a turn at holding her. Just when Gillian’s distress about the baby reaches a crescendo, a saviour steps in with a healing solution.
What does the dream mean? How does it relate to Gillian’s life, and how can she use the insight she gains from our exploration and interpretation of her dream to help resolve a key issue?

It was as if the old dream itself was calling, ‘Pick me, pick me!” urging Jann to revisit what was a very moving dream, but one that she didn’t explore at the time. When she noticed that the dream was sitting right next to one of my books on her desk, she decided to look up my website and discovered The Dream Show.
My curiosity was piqued: why did the dream reappear quite dramatically at this point in Jann’s life? What light might her dream shed on both what was going on for her five years ago and what’s going on for her now?
Piqued, I picked.
As you know, guests keep their dreams a surprise for me. I hear the dream for the first time after we begin recording, so when you listen to a podcast you share the experience of hearing the dream as I hear it, and exploring and interpreting the dream as it happens.
Jann knew the formula, but she couldn’t resist emailing me to say that although she wouldn’t say anything about the dream, she had experienced a run of synchronicities and insights during the 72 hours between contacting me and getting ready to record our conversation, and that she had a relevant photo she wanted to send.
Curious though I was, I asked Jann to reserve sending me the photo until we had recorded the podcast, so that it wouldn’t influence my approach to the dream.
Jann duly sent it after we did the recording, and she’s very happy to share it – her painting of the Warrior of the Dreamtime – here.

Tired of having his sleep disrupted by waking up several times each night to write out his dreams, he developed his magnetic memory work to create a system for remembering his dreams that allowed him to stay in bed, wake only briefly for a minute or so, and then drift back to sleep. In the morning, his dreams were all there for him.
As you’ll hear, Anthony underwent many years of psychotherapy involving dream work, and this led to the continuing exploration of his dreams today.
Anthony shares the rollercoaster dream he had the night before we recorded the interview, so listen in as we also briefly but efficiently interpret the dream and relate it to Anthony’s life.

This beautiful, haunting, quite ethereal dream, digs deep beneath the surface layers, though the spandex and red underwear are clues that take Alexandra to meaningful places.
During the dream there’s a crocodile and a burnt out derelict petrol station to pass before the scene magically opens to the ancient causeway where she finds white stones and bones shaped like little people and animals.

The dream dilemma was over how much she should trim those two seven inch hair wires poking out from his eyebrows, and what exactly her father’s enigmatic dream advice meant.
Amanda said she usually has epic dreams, and this one interested her because it was short and seemed important, though she had no idea what it meant. She was excited to come onto the show and explore her dream.
As you’ll hear when you listen to us delving into her dream, it delivers up its treasures and Amanda relates it to her waking life, what she’s doing, what’s recently changed, and where she will go from here given the clarity received during the dream work.

Shauna* is transitioning careers, and is about to fully launch her new business within the month. She brings a dream that begins with a live and kicking three-month-old baby, and ends with a doctor and nurse cradling a dead baby. In the dream, Shauna felt she belonged in their world where she could feel their pain and offer meaningful help, but she was uncomfortable about the dream ending in this way.
Vic is transitioning from female to male, and brings a dream about cutting short a journey up a rocky hill because “I am missing my parents”. A black storm cloud approaches and the dream ends with the parents gone from Vic’s life.
You’ll hear Shauna and I exploring her dream, relating it to her life, and discovering insights that help her to transition into her new career in the best possible way.
You’ll hear my interpretation of Vic’s dream, highlighting the perspective shift that will free Vic to move through conflict and embrace full transition.

I mention, during the show, that I’m frequently contacted by worried young teens who dream of shooting a parent, so we take an aside to discuss this too.

When one of the aliens attacks her with an innocuous looking coat rack that turns into a weapon emitting invisible rays, her energy is quickly drained.
There’s a shift to what starts out as a happier scene, where Melinda is about to give birth, in a futuristic, hi-tech way.
A beautiful baby girl is extracted from her flat tummy, but sadly turns into a cupcake, which Melinda promptly eats.

Emily from San Francisco is my guest with a dream about cooking beef stroganoff from leftover beef. Exactly how much meat do you need to make this dish, and will there be enough to feed everyone?
Emily sets off on a mission to buy more meat. Along the way, she finds herself with three women, each with a petal in place of their head. Doesn’t this dream begin to sound like a fairy tale? What began as a serious, practical journey becomes quite magical at this point. It’s also at this point that Emily’s dream becomes more emotional.
The final part of Emily’s dream finds her back on the road again, running hard, but I’ll leave you to enjoy listening to discover what happens next, and why.

Laraina, from Canada, is my guest this episode, bringing her epic and vibrant dream for interpretation. Early in her dream she hears an anthem, so harmonious, so peaceful, so full of love, that she thinks she’ll never be able to recreate this moment.
What does the anthem represent in Laraina’s life, and how does the rest of her dream help her to see how to bring it more fully into her life?
As well as musical moments, there are some comic moments in this dream, notably one involving the actor Kristen Wiig and two cell phones attached to two plastic flyswatters being given a bashing.
But along with the lightness there are challenging and heavier journeys in this dream, as Laraina climbs down steep treacherous mountain paths in Turkey towards a deep brown-black sea, and hauls her way back up, almost giving up.
What a mouthful she gives the woman dressed in red at the end of the dream! Laraina is so angry with this woman for … well, listen in to find out.
