Otherwise, other wise

"Who's going to take the plug out, you or me?" I'd ask.Bath time, when my children were very small, was great fun until the moment came to lift them from the water. They never wanted to get out. Eventually I found the happy solution.

“Who’s going to take the plug out, you or me?” I’d ask.

“Me! Me! I want to!” would come the unerring reply.

Once the water was gone, they were happy to leap out and move on to the next game. It worked until they were old enough to realise that I was giving them severely limited options and that it was me who was really pulling the plug on their fun.

A man once told me about a dream in which he was in a rowing boat on a calm lake when five tornadoes appeared. The tornadoes struck the water and spun it into gurgling holes, as if five enormous bath plugs had been pulled from the sand beneath the lake. He felt the dream was warning him that his money, invested in various projects, was going ‘down the gurgler’.

Our warning dreams motivate us to take action. But what kind of action should we take?

He felt the dream was warning him that his money, invested in various projects, was going 'down the gurgler'.

He felt the dream was warning him that his money, invested in various projects, was going ‘down the gurgler’.

Are our dream warnings accurate, or do they reflect our fears and beliefs?  Was this man’s money inevitably going down the gurgler or was he projecting (and creating) this outcome based on his unconscious beliefs and experiences – his conditioning? Had the plug already been pulled or did he have more expansive options?

And, in any case, was this man’s dream about his financial affairs or did it reflect other valuable information he could apply to ensure calm waters in his life?

My children expected only one outcome: that the plug would be removed in the next minute and the water would go down the plughole. So the outcome always manifested. If they had been older they might have suggested we run more hot water, stay in the bath longer, get take-away instead of cooking dinner and still get to bed on time. They would have learned the lesson that other wise options always exist. Or they might have stayed in the bath until the water went cold and learned a different but equally wise lesson from their experience.

My children expected only one outcome: that the plug would be removed in the next minute and the water would go down the plughole.

My children expected only one outcome: that the plug would be removed in the next minute and the water would go down the plughole.

Alternatives. Wider choices. Whichever way, we gain wisdom from our choices if we are open enough to learn the lessons they offer. Sometimes the wisdom is learned under happy circumstances (the hot water and take-away choice) and sometimes less happy circumstances (the cold water choice).

“Take the plug out? Otherwise what?” my children might have asked, had they been older back in the bath plug days. “Otherwise you will become other wise”, I may have replied.

To grow, to gain wisdom, we often need change. We need to challenge ourselves to explore the wider options of the otherwise.

If life wisdom is the path, there can be no wrong choices. Just different choices and different routes. But if we hold a vision, a goal, how can we find the best route, the one that delivers both the desired reward and wisdom?

Well, naturally our dreams provide the answers but how can we recognise them?

Our dreams are symbolic snapshots in time: picturing your current mindset.

Our dreams are symbolic snapshots in time: picturing your current mindset.

Our dreams are symbolic snapshots in time. They show us ourselves – our conscious and unconscious beliefs, experiences, memories and feelings relating to life at the time of the dream. Specifically they show us (once interpreted) how our unconscious beliefs are affecting our waking life and where those beliefs originated.

It is our beliefs – especially our unconscious ones – that shape our future. Above all, our fears shape our future by limiting our choices. We tend not to take the path that requires us to face our fears. Pulling the plug seems an easier option.

Our dreams are blueprints of the future, projecting outcomes based on our past responses to life.

Our dreams are blueprints of the future, projecting outcomes based on our past responses to life.

Looked at in this way, our dreams are blueprints of the future, projecting outcomes based on our past responses to life. In this way too, dreams can be said to be prophetic.

If the man’s tornado dream was indeed about his financial affairs then it may have been reflecting his fears and beliefs that his money would go down the gurgler, and such fears possibly may have created that result.

What was his dream advising him to do?

He may have saved money by withdrawing his investments if he was in danger of creating doom.

Otherwise he could use the dream to identify the negative fears and beliefs and change them, using dream alchemy practices.  By changing the blueprint his projected future changes and the situation is defused.

Change the blueprint to change the future.

Change the blueprint to change the future.

To change the outcome, change the belief.

To change the outer world, change the inner one.

Beware the warning dream otherwise you may miss the real gold.

(The deeper meaning of the dream: The five tornadoes represented five major changes – the winds of change – in this man’s life that, each time, had ‘torn’ his calm world apart. Water often represents the emotions. These changes had stirred his deepest emotions, even though all appeared calm on the surface. His dream reflected his belief, based on these experiences, that whenever things were calm, a huge change would sweep in and shake him to the core. This belief extended to his financial affairs, ensuring regular calamity. His dream required him to look back at those changes to reap the wisdom of the otherwise and to transform his beliefs in destructive change into constructive change.)

Future blessings

To move ahead, see beyond your current limitation.

What would you like to change about your life? What seems to be stopping you from achieving this?

I’ve just opened my book, The Compass, at random, to find a reading for today’s blog. It opened at 130: See Beyond. Here it is:

SEE BEYOND

WHY?

The future blesses you with hindsight.

CLARITY

What is upsetting or distressing you?

What is the obstacle you see in front of you?

Can you see a way through, or around, this obstacle? Not yet? Then the obstacle will continue to block your path until you do, locking you into your blocked situation. To move ahead, see beyond your current limitation. When you look back from the future, today will look different. Hindsight delivers a clear solution. Where do you want to be? Imagine looking back from there. What do you see?

ALCHEMY PRACTICE

Imagine yourself in the future, beyond the current obstacle, living the life you have been wishing for. Add another ten years, or more if you prefer. How will life be for you then? Write a letter from your happy, fulfilled self in the future, to you at your current age. Describe your life, and express the wisdom and insight you have received during the intervening years. Don’t involve your brain much in this practice: let your gut instinct write this letter.

You’ll be surprised what you learn in foresight-hindsight!

Blueprint of the future

Once you see the pattern of your life – the blueprint of your future – you can change it, if you wish.

Once you see the pattern of your life – the blueprint of your future – you can change it, if you wish.

Tell your dream to a friend. Okay, so not everyone is interested in dreams, but many are, and if you find someone to swap dreams with, this exercise will work really well for both of you.

Tell your dream to a friend, and then ask him to summarise your dream in no more than a couple of sentences. Listen carefully to those two sentences. Perhaps even write them down.

For example, the summary might be something like, “You are lost and can’t find your way. You keep going round in circles”, or “You want to fly higher but people keep saying you can’t.”

Then ask your friend how he sees that summary applying to your life. Then ask yourself how that summary applies to your life. Between the two of you, you’ll strike gold. A friend, just one step removed from your situation, can often see more clearly than you.

Once you see the pattern of your life – the blueprint of your future – you can change it, if you wish, using dream alchemy.

Become the pattern maker, not the pattern.

Put the baggage down

What are you doing for others that they could do for themselves?

Today I invited FaceBook Fans to pick a number between 1 and 365 to get a reading from my book The Compass. (There are 365 readings in the book.)

Sarah was first to respond, picking number 256, ‘Put the baggage down’. Here’s the full reading:

256: PUT THE BAGGAGE DOWN
WHY?

When your hands are free, you can put yesterday to bed and build a new tomorrow.

CLARITY

In which situation do you feel your hands are tied?

What are you doing for others that they could do for themselves?

Imagine stopping doing this. How does this make you feel? What might you gain? What might you lose? How might others respond to you? What might happen next?  Who did you first feel responsible for in your life? Why did you feel responsible? How did this responsibility make you feel? Alternatively, are you still weighed down by unhealed feelings of guilt, remorse, rejection, disappointment?

ALCHEMY PRACTICE

Find some quiet time, turn off your phone, and settle down with a piece of paper and a pen. You are going to write a poem – no rhyming or cleverness required – in ten minutes flat. Turn off your brain, and just let your gut instinct write the poem. No sentences, no attention to grammar – just free-floating words on your page. Don’t think about it or plan it beforehand. Just start. The title is, Weighed Down. See what comes up.

Enjoy

Here’s a reading I’ve chosen for you at random from my book The Compass.

There are 365 readings in the book. This is number 113.

The Compass, your guide to your best future

The Compass, your guide to your best future

113: ENJOY

WHY?

Enjoyment introduces you to the moment.

CLARITY

What do you enjoy most in your life?

Which regular task do you not enjoy doing?

How do you feel when you are doing that task? What other thoughts are on your mind at that time? How much time do you spend thinking about the past, the future, or what else you could be doing? How many moments of your life pass you by in this way?

Every task has at least one enjoyable facet, when you know how to look. Are you ready to live in every moment, instead of wishing time away?

ALCHEMY PRACTICE

Think about that regular task you do not enjoy doing, for example, vacuuming the carpet, doing your accounts, or weeding the garden. First ask what is the main purpose of each task, for example, to cleanse the room of dust so that everyone can breathe easily, to maximise how much money is available, or to give flowers room to grow, bloom, and be beautiful. As you do the task, focus on the feeling that you are clearing the air, creating more money, or causing flowers to bloom. If there really is no positive purpose in doing a task, then don’t do it!

Release the future

Attend the bud

Attend the bud

Here’s a reading I’ve chosen for you at random from my book The Compass

There are 365 readings in the book. This is number 223:

223: RELEASE THE FUTURE

WHY?

Your future is in better hands when you are fully alive to the present.

CLARITY

How much time do you spend thinking about, or worrying about, the future?

How much time do you spend tuning into the present?

Looking back, what was the best opportunity you ever followed? When did that opportunity first present itself? What did you need to do to take action on that opportunity? Were you focussed on the present, or worrying about the future when you took that opportunity? Are you ready to tune into the now, and trust it to always be your guide?

ALCHEMY PRACTICE

Imagine your future as a resplendent open flower, its petals tilted towards the sun. Today those petals are enclosed within a tiny bud, still growing, developing colour, texture, and perfume in readiness for future emergence. Today that bud is in your care. Neglect it, and it may wither. Attend to it, and it will thrive. You do not need to worry about the colour of the future petals, how they will smell, what pattern they will form, who will see them. You do not need to worry about the future. Worry distracts you from the present. Attend to the present with total awareness. With senses wide open, attend to the now-bud.
